Arpeggione Ensemble Presents: Rebels and Socialites: Women Ahead of their Time

  • First Religious Society 26 Pleasant Street Newburyport, MA United States (map)

A musical portrait of women who broke barriers, realized their unique artistic visions, and changed how we experience culture today.

“Rebels and Socialites” tells the story of women, at the turn of the 20th century, who realized their artistic visions despite societal expectations and barriers. Created in partnership with the Waring School, located in Beverly on the former estate of Edith Coolidge Miles, this concert will depict  Coolidge Miles artist, gardener, philanthropist – and two of her remarkable relatives. These relatives – Isabella Stewart Gardner, visionary art collector, and Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, unrivaled patron of chamber music, parallel Coolidge Miles’ life and show how women were able to use their voices and visions to make an impact on artistic culture. Their lives paved the way for women who would follow after them. The program will feature music connected to their lives and celebrate women composers including Florence Price, Amy Beach, Rebecca Clarke and Ethyl Smyth.
